While your parents may have been able to comfortably retire on Social Security benefits and work pensions, these options are all but gone today. You may receive some benefits, but the meager sum won’t likely cover your years of retirement. This makes it exceptionally important for adults to begin saving for retirement as early as possible.
A great way to begin saving for retirement is to create a diverse financial portfolio to help grow and protect your assets. We’ve compiled a few tips to help point you in the right direction.
-
Save a portion of each paycheck: Simply put, if the money never makes it into your primary bank account, you can easily overlook it. Take a percentage of each paycheck and deposit it straight into a savings account. If it’s not readily visible, you likely won’t miss it. Meanwhile, your savings will grow and may even accumulate interest over the years.
-
Start a 401(k) and/or IRA plan: Both of these retirement plans are viable options for savers. Many employers offer 401(k) programs in which a percentage of your paychecks are deposited into the account, where funds are only taxed upon removal. Your employer may also offer a matching program, helping you save even more. An IRA plan taxes funds as they’re contributed, which can later be withdrawn tax-free. Both plans allow interest to accrue over the years, often yielding a high return on investment.
-
Invest in stocks: While a risky tactic, investing in stocks can lead to a healthy payout. Risk is often assessed by age. While younger investors have more time to regain any losses, investors closer to retirement may not be able to recoup losses before funds are needed. Your financial advisor can help guide your investment decisions.
-
Leave it alone: When it comes time to buy a new home or send your child to college, it may be tempting to tap into your retirement savings. But it’s best to leave it be. Viewing your savings as an untouchable account helps preserve its integrity, often resulting in more funds later in life when you need them to survive.
